Makerspace Funding

The library is calling on community support to help sustain its free STEAM-based Makerspace programs for youth ages 10–18. Funding from the Illinois State Library’s Project Next Generation (PNG) grant has been a vital part of the Makerspace budget. This program enables the Highwood Library & Community Center to provide hands-on learning experiences that build creativity, confidence, and critical thinking — all free of charge for local youth.

As this program is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the ongoing federal government shutdown has paused IMLS funding, resulting in a loss of more than $20,000 in Makerspace support for this grant year.

We remain committed to ensuring that youth continue to have access to engaging, no-cost programs that inspire exploration and innovation.
